New Rifle for a Few
Rumor is that the SOF community may be getting a new rifle in the caliber of 6.8mm to replace the 5.56mm. This is probably a response to complaints received in Afghanistan that the M16 just couldn't get it done, particularly at ranges beyond 300 meters. Shots beyond 300 meters in terrain like Afghanistan are probably useful and I bet they could be in Iraq. As would the increased penetration against vehicles. My question is, if the 5.56mm isn't up to the task why are we buying into the XM8 rifle as a replacement to the M16 family if it is in 5.56mm?
